But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. John 14:26 (NKJV)
This past Sunday was Pentecost Sunday, and it was an opportunity to celebrate the release of the Holy Spirit to the church. Pentecost points to much more than this, but it was an opportunity to be grateful for the Holy Spirit. Gratefulness and thankfulness is one of the keys to experiencing a deeper measure of the Spirit.
The Greek word for comforter literally means ‘one who is called’ or ‘one who is invited beside’. While there may be a legal application to this, I find the above definitions amazing. The Holy Spirit has been called to us. He has also been invited to walk beside us.
Since the Holy Spirit is ‘one who is invited beside’, a relationship is implied. This is someone who will journey with you throughout life. As I have been meditating on this, one of the conclusions I have come to is that the Holy Spirit has been called alongside us so that we can operate as mature sons. Without developing a relationship with this person, we will not come to maturity.
There are interesting days ahead of us, and one of the keys to navigating is the Holy Spirit. You and I need to develop a relationship. This means going beyond studying the scriptures on the Holy Spirit to meditating and praying through those scriptures for yourself. It means honoring the Holy Spirit with our language. It will not happen if we just mention the name ‘Holy Spirit’ once a week during a Sunday Service. That name needs to be on our lips.
It has severally been said that these are the best of times and the worst of times. The pressure is there to help us draw close to God. Develop a relationship with the Holy Spirit and your best days will lie ahead of you.
